4 Ways to Beat the Heat During a Summer Workout
Working out in the summer can get messy (read: sweaty). To avoid getting overheated, try out these tips.
1. Rise Up
If you want to work out outside, try getting up a little earlier. The sun is at its strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., so go for a run before breakfast or brunch. For a real challenge (and to stay as cool as possible), get up before the sun. Take advantage of Arkansas’ many mountains and watch the sunrise from the peak of Pinnacle or Petit Jean.
2. Get Low
"Low" as in "low-impact." Forget about all that bouncing up and down (looking at you, running and Zumba). Instead, go for a low-impact activity like yoga, tai chi, walking or cycling. Keep your movements slow, strong and intentional and you won’t miss out on your workout (but you will miss out on breathlessness and getting overheated).
3. Immerse Yourself
Head down to the river, lake or pool and immerse yourself in watersports. Join a water aerobics class or swim a few laps at your neighborhood pool. Kayak down the Buffalo (or float, if you’re not in the mood for a workout). Paddle boat or water ski on the lake. You’ll keep cool, have fun and get the exercise your body needs.
4. Stay Hydrated
Splurge on a water bottle that’s easy to drink from and that you don’t mind carrying around. That may mean getting one with a purifying system included or one that lets you infuse your water with fruit. In any case, drink from it and constantly refill it. It’s easy to get dehydrated in the summer and if you’re exercising you’ll be losing even more water. Click here for even more ideas to stay hydrated.
