Pokemon Go: A Fitness Sensation
At this point, most people have heard of Pokemon Go, the new augmented reality game in which players try to “catch ‘em all.” Many have dismissed Pokemon Go as a silly fad, but it can be a useful fitness tool - many teens and college students say that it’s gotten them to go outside so they can level up.
Since I downloaded the app, I’ve walked around 15 miles total (or three miles per day), nearly double my usual daily distance. Here are four ways to get the most out of Pokemon Go, from a fitness standpoint:
1. Go On a Walk
Ready? Set? Get walking! It will be good for you and good for your game. Walking is the best way to find new Pokemon and PokeStops. You may even find public fountains or art you weren’t aware of in your community. Many PokeStops are located on public art or in parks. Don’t try to cheat the game by driving by every PokeStop in town - if you’re going too fast, it won’t work.
2. Stock Up On Eggs
Once you’re in the game, you may find yourself with an egg or two. When they hatch, you’ll get new Pokemon, but you must walk to hatch your eggs. The app counts the distance you’ve traveled, not the amount of steps you’ve taken. That means you won’t be able to shake your phone and fool it into thinking you’ve walked 10 kilometers already. So lace up your sneaks and get going!
3. Find a Populated Area
Say, downtown Little Rock? In the River Market District, you’ll find a PokeStop every few blocks, including a ton on the trails of Riverfront Park. Stop by a local restaurant to grab some PokeBalls with your lunch, then continue down the street. You’ll probably meet some fellow players along the way. Due to the high velocity of players, a lot of Lures are set at these PokeStops.
4. Head to the Park
Remember what I said about Riverfront Park? That’s not the only park full of Pokemon around. Many city parks have gyms and PokeStops. Start walking for your Pokemon and you’ll keep walking because it’s so pleasant. (And because you only have a one more kilometer until you hatch a new baby Charmander.)
