Spoiler alert: All those Pinterest lifehacks aren’t ADA-approved.

We’ve all seen our fair share of DIY fails, but most aren’t detrimental to your dental work. However, there are quite a few sources on the interwebs that promote “natural” teeth whitening solutions, but the American Dental Association says otherwise.

The ADA warns against using naturally acidic items and digestive enzyme-packed fruits (think lemons, oranges, pineapples, mangos, apple cider vinegar, etc.) and super abrasive household goods like activated charcoal or baking soda-hydrogen peroxide paste. While fruit is normally a great option, prolonged exposure to acids and harsh scrubs can destroy your enamel, exposing the yellow dentin underneath and leaving your teeth susceptible to cavities. And as for oil pulling and using spices like turmeric, there’s no strong evidence to prove they really work.

If you really want to change your smile, look for items with the ADA Seal of Acceptance and talk to your dentist. Learn more at MouthHealthy.org.
